Whether you prefer to spend your weekends in the Poconos or at the Jersey shore, thousands of other Pennsylvania drivers have the same idea. Higher levels of road congestion during the summer months lead to accidents caused by road rage, erratic driving, lack of familiarity with the local routes, and driving distraction. Road construction projects, more common in the summer, add to this effect.
More pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycle riders
These groups have a much higher risk for serious accident injury than drivers and passengers in cars and larger motor vehicles. Everyone on the road should remain aware of their surroundings and stay as visible to others as possible.
Rainy weather
Pennsylvania, like many areas of the U.S., sees its share of wet roads during the summer months. Waterlogged areas can cause hydroplaning, while heavy rains limit driver visibility. The same effect can occur when the sun comes out and the glare makes it difficult to see others on the road.
More new drivers
Adolescents have a higher fatal auto accident risk than any other age group. AAA has called attention to this issue with its 100 Deadliest Days of Summer campaign. The agency reports that the 100 days after Memorial Day see an average of 10 teen car crash fatalities every day.
Driving distractions, including devices and other passengers, remain the biggest factor behind serious auto accident injuries involving teen and twenty-something drivers.
