How to document the scene after a crash

A car crash is an unexpected event, but knowing what to do in the aftermath of a wreck may help you advocate for yourself should the case wind up in court. Not all injuries experienced in car wrecks are apparent right away. You may, too, find damage to your vehicle after you have already left the crash scene.

For these reasons, it is important that you thoroughly document the scene of a crash before leaving the area. When doing so, first, assess the condition of everyone in your vehicle to make sure there are no pressing injuries. After you exchange information with other drivers involved in the incident, take the following steps if it safe to do so.

Photograph the surrounding area

Do you think poor signage or road conditions contribute to your crash? If so, document any aspects of the surrounding area. If you or other vehicles involved left behind skid marks during the incident, photograph them.

It may also help to snap photos of street signs, traffic lights or other elements that may have contributed to the wreck.

Photograph injuries and vehicle damage

Also document any injuries you or your passengers received or any damage your vehicle suffered during the car crash. If glass broke or your airbag deployed, take pictures of it. If you suffered cuts, lacerations or bruises during the event, photograph these areas.

Images from multiple distances

When photographing the area where your crash occurred, start snapping photos from about 10 feet away and then work your way inward. Take more photos the closer you get to the crash scene.
